Ervin Santana No-Hitter: Other No-Hitters With A Run Allowed

Ervin Santana threw a no-hitter on Wednesday, but he also allowed a run. Is this some sort of paradox? Is this inception? The first Indians hitter reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a grounder, and scored on a wild pitch. This is how the Padres won 90 games last year. For Santana, it was an inauspicious start to his game.

There have only been eight nine-inning games in which a pitcher allowed a run without giving up a hit:

Broken into categories:

No one to blame but yourself
Joe Cowley and Dean Chance couldn’t stop walking guys. In the bottom of the sixth in Cowley’s no-hitter, he actually walked the bases loaded with nobody out before Reggie Jackson hit a sacrifice fly. Chance walked two hitters in the first, and after an error loaded the bases, allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

Bad fielding
Dick Allen reached on an error from his shortstop in George Culver’s start, moved to third on a grounder, then scored on a sac fly. This is almost identical to what happened in Don Nottebart’s start, except the runner advanced to third on a bunt.

The run in Bob Feller’s no-hitter came on an error, a stolen base that advanced to third on a throwing error, and a sac fly. Oof.

Santana’s start would be in this group.

Probably bad fielding/unknown
There isn’t a play-by-play for Dazzy Vance’s start, but there were three errors behind him, and he only allowed one walk. It was probably bad fielding. Also, though it might be easy to overlook because he’s in the Hall of Fame, never forget how awesome of a name Dazzy Vance is.

It's everybody's fault
Darryl Kile walked Jeff McKnight and threw a wild pitch that skipped away from the catcher and went so far that it was Jeff Bagwell who fielded it. He promptly winged it into left field trying to get McKnight at third. Now that's a wild pitch.

And no one ever made eye contract with him for three months
In the ninth inning of Ken Johnson’s no-hitter, Pete Rose reached second on an throwing error. It should be noted that Johnson was fielding a Rose bunt in the ninth inning of a no-hitter because Pete Rose was a weenie and a jerk, who also was good at winning games.

Rose moved to third on a grounder with one out, and scored on a two-out error by the second baseman. Joe Nuxhall shut down Houston in the bottom of the ninth for the 1-0 victory. And that was the most painful game to watch in the history of baseball.
