The New York Giants will give coach Tom Coughlin at least two more years at the helm. The Giants announced on Twitter that they have given Coughlin a one-year extension; it will run through the 2012 season.
Tom Coughlin Signs 1-Year Extension With New York Giants Through 2012 Season
Financials of the deal have not been disclosed, but Coughlin reportedly signed a four-year, $21 million deal with the Giants in 2008, just after leading the team to the franchise’s third Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl 42.
Coughlin has coached the Giants since the 2004 season, compiling a 65-47 record in New York. The Giants have one losing season under Coughlin — 2004’s 6-10 campaign — and have made the playoffs four times with Coughlin steering the ship.
But the Giants haven’t won a playoff game under Coughlin except as part of that 2007 run to the Super Bowl, and Coughlin’s martinet-like approach has been known to wear on his players. That concern, combined with worries about Coughlin’s age (he turns 65 in August) may have contributed to him getting a one-year extension rather than a long-term deal.
