The New Orleans Saints acted quickly in replacing the recently departed Reggie Bush, agreeing to terms on a multi-year contract with former San Diego Chargers running back Darren Sproles, according to a report.
Darren Sproles, New Orleans Saints Reportedly Agree To Terms On Two-Year Deal
Sproles was having difficulty finding the field in San Diego after the Chargers draft Ryan Mathews in the first round and the emergence of goal-line bruiser Mike Tolbert last year made him a luxury. He's still one of the more lethal players in the league in the open field.
For the saints, this is a win-win. They have a running back who can catch the ball out of the backfield that's even shiftier than Bush or Pierre Thomas. Saints head coach Sean Payton even acknowledged that Sproles would fill much of the same role that Bush played, though he downplayed the team's interest in him in a New Orleans TV station's story early Thursday:
"(Sproles has) a comparable skill set with Reggie, but I don't know that's something that we've targeted initially," Payton said.
