MLB Trade Rumors: Orioles Weighing Options With Jeremy Guthrie

There hasn’t been much talk about Jeremy Guthrie lately, perhaps because he’s got (gulp) 14 losses this season, just two seasons removed from leading the American League with (gulp) 17 losses. Here’s the thing, though ... Guthrie has actually pitched pretty well this season: 4.33 ERA, with his peripherals dead even with the rest of his career. Granted, with hitting down again this season, having the same numbers doesn’t mean they’re exactly as good ... but Guthrie’s still basically the same pitcher he’s always been, a No. 3 or 4 starter (for a good team) who’s going to give you six or seven innings every five days.

Which makes him fairly valuable, at least to contenders with thin rotations. Thus, this shouldn’t be all that surprising:

Detroit and Cleveland, a game-and-a-half apart at the top of the American League Central table, are famously thin. If the Pirates are really interested, it tells you they’re tired of Jason McDonald’s inability to pitch seven innings; he hasn’t done that even once this season, in 20 starts.

This season’s lost, for the Orioles. The thing they tried, it didn’t work. Now it’s time to cut their losses, and that means trading (relatively) high-priced veterans like Guthrie and Derrek Lee for any prospects and payroll relief they can get.
