Chicharito Concussion Could Be More Serious Than Originally Thought

When Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez was hit on the top of the head by a ball during a training session prior to Manchester United's 4-0 win over the MLS All-Stars, nobody though much of it, including the striker. He continued training before falling ill in a hotel later. Ultimately, he had to miss the match, with Dimitar Berbatov making a semi-rare start in his place. The diagnosis? A concussion. Sir Alex Ferguson said that he expected him back in 'two or three weeks', which put him at risk of missing the season opener, but that's all.

Chivas de Guadalajara doctor Rafael Ortega tells a different story, however, claiming that Chicharito, who played for the club between 1997 and last August, has a history of acute migraines and that United should keep a close watch on the situation:

I remember in his time as a youth player at Chivas he suffered from acute migraines. Originally it manifested itself as a headache but afterwards the symptoms disappeared. We had some studies done on him but that was six years ago and he has done well since.

I don’t know if this will affect him in the future but I’m sure United will send him to a specialist and the situation will be resolved.

Hernandez is one of the most exciting young players in the Premier League, and so the hope is obviously that this is as United say, a straightforward concussion. But with his apparent history with head problems... it’s probably better to be safe than sorry.
