Roma Agree With Ajax On Deal To Buy Maarten Stekelenburg

The negotiations between AS Roma and Ajax for Maarten Stekelenburg that have lasted seemingly all summer have finally come to an end. The two clubs have agreed to a deal for the Dutch goalkeeper to join Roma after securing the bank guarantees that appeared to have been the last hurdle to completing the deal. Stekelenburg will now fly to Rome to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms. Once that is taken care of, the 28-year-old will be introduced as the new goalkeeper in the Italian capital.

Roma and Ajax began talking about a deal for Stekelenburg at the beginning of the summer, but those talks have stopped and started for the last couple months. The goalkeeper has just one year left on his contract with Ajax and performed spectacularly for Ajax and the Netherlands so he has been pegged for a move to a bigger club all summer. It appears as if now he will make it by heading to Roma.

“It is finally time to discuss the contract of Maarten. This has all taken way too long,” Stekelenburg’s agent Rob Jansen told Sport-promotion.

Stekelenburg has spent his entire career with Ajax, but will now look to shore up a Roma defense that allowed the fourth-most goals in Serie A last year. The transfer fee has yet to be revealed, but reports have it anywhere between €5.5 million and €7 million.
