The Detroit Tigers, apparently tired of blowout losses (their pitching staff allowed 14 or more runs three times in the last week), fired pitching coach Rick Knapp today. He's the second pitching coach to lose his job in the last month; the Astros replaced Brad Arnsberg on June 14.
Tigers Fire Pitching Coach Rick Knapp
Knapp, a minor league pitching coordinator with the Twins for several seasons, had been the Tigers' pitching coach since the beginning of the 2009 season.
MLB.com reports that Knapp's replacement will be Tigers bullpen coach Jeff Jones. Jones has been in the Tigers organization since 1989, serving in various roles including Triple-A pitching coach; he has been the team's bullpen coach since the beginning of the 2007 season (as well as some short stints in that role in several other seasons). Jones pitched in the major leagues with the Athletics for parts of five seasons from 1980-84.
Replacing Jones as Tigers bullpen coach will be Mike Rojas, who has been in the Detroit organization since 2004 and their minor league field coordinator since 2007.
