There's been talk about the Nationals going after Denard Span for several days now. The Nationals have checked in on a number of young center fielders, but Span appears to be the apple of their eye, and Ken Rosenthal suggests that something could get done shortly:
MLB Trade Rumors: Denard Span May Be Close To Getting Dealt To Nationals
#Twins scout watching #Nationals tonight. Trade with Span and Storen as centerpieces continues to look close.
The trade wouldn't be Span for Drew Storen straight up. Jim Bowden reported earlier:
Twins insisting on STOREN without substitution.. along with Bernadina and Lombardozzi in package for SPAN...both sides grinding
Bernadina is Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina, and Lombardozzi is Nationals second base prospect Stephen Lombardozzi. This is all just in the rumor stages right now, but it wouldn't be the worst idea for you to get more familiar with those names anyway. Bernadina's a 27-year-old with a career .668 OPS, while Lombardozzi's a 22-year-old with a .788 OPS in triple-A.
Of course, Span and Storen would be the prizes, and what complicates things is that Span still hasn’t played in the majors since June 6 after sustaining a concussion. But the Nationals don’t appear to be too worried, so, who knows? A healthy Span would seem to be a big get, considering his defense and ability to get on base.
