The Washington Nationals, as we've told you, are all about Minnesota Twins center fielder Denard Span. They've been hot in pursuit for days, as they try to bring in a long-term answer at the position.
MLB Trade Rumors: Denard Span, Drew Storen Might Not Get Dealt For One Another
The only problem? They're just having the damndest time reaching an agreement. Saturday night, it was reported that the Nationals were reluctant to include Drew Storen in a trade, which proved to be an obstacle since Storen was the guy the Twins wanted. Sunday, it's being reported that a trade looks increasingly unlikely.
What’s weird is that the Sunday reports suggest that the Nationals are now willing to include the closer Storen, and the disagreement is centered on the rest of the package, since it wouldn’t be a one-for-one swap. So at least that implies movement. Trading a cost-controlled center fielder for a cost-controlled closer would be lopsided, so it stands to reason the Twins are looking for more value than just Storen, and the Nationals apparently don’t want to give much more up.
If Span doesn't work out, the Nationals could always turn their attention to B.J. Upton and try to get something done very quickly.
