Sergio Canales Moves To Valencia On Loan

Fantastic news in the world of football: Real Madrid have (temporarily) freed Sergio Canales from his prison at the Santiago Bernabeu. The talented 20-year-old is bound for Valencia on a season-long loan after Jose Mourinho finally took pity on him for being trapped behind the club's slew of superb attacking midfield players, which means we might finally see Canales gracing the pitch in Spain this year. Canales, of course, saw just 15 games with Madrid last year after he emerged as a teenage sensation with Racing Sentander in the 2009/10 season and was subsequently snapped up for €4.5M and signed to a six-year contract

However, despite escaping Kaka and company, things might not be entirely rosy for Canales, who’s currently with Spain’s team at the under-20 World Cup Finals. With Valencia having acquired Daniel Parejo just a few days ago, Canales is unlikely to find himself holding a starting spot in the centre of the pitch, and Valencia already have Juan Mata and Pablo Hernandez manning the wings. So, just like at his previous, there’s not an obvious route to the starting position for Canales at his new club - but at least there aren’t half a dozen players between him and the first XI like there were under Mourinho.

The move could, however, be the precursor to something else. Mata has been linked with a move away from the Mestalla for most of the summer, and the acquisition of Canales could help Valencia weather that loss. Could this end up being a win for everyone involved?
