Jon Scheyer Joining Maccabi Tel Aviv After Duke Basketball Career

Jon Scheyer, a former Duke Blue Devils basketball player, has signed with Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv. Since he is Jewish, Scheyer is eligible for Israeli citizenship and not count against the team's international roster limit. He said that his time at Duke leaves him well prepared for this kind of opportunity:

“At Duke, we had a target on our back every day,” Scheyer said. “Expectations are high too. When you lose a game, it’s a big deal at Duke. I think that is very similar to how it is here. I am used to those expectations, and I just want to live up to them.”

Scheyer helped lead the Blue Devils to the national championship during his senior season (2009-10), but went undrafted in the subsequent NBA Draft. He then suffered a freak eye injury while playing with the Miami Heat’s summer league team and ended up sitting out most of last season.

The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 18.2 points his senior year and is expected to play a key role for the reigning Israeli champions.
