Reggie Johnson Knee Surgery Could Sideline Miami Starter For Six Months

Reggie Johnson, an expected starter for the University of Miami Hurricanes basketball team, will likely miss the start of the season and is expected to be out five to six months after undergoing surgery to repair his injured knee. Johnson tore the meniscus in his right knee while playing pickup basketball with his Miami teammates last week. He is expected to be back in time for the start of the ACC season in January.

Johnson averaged 11.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game as a sophomore. Miami finished the season 21-15, but failed to make the NCAA basketball tournament. They did, however, advance all the way to the NIT quarterfinals, where they lost to the University of Alabama. In that quarterfinal loss, Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The 6-10, 303-pound center averaged 12.3 points, 12.0 rebounds and .67 blocks per game during the Hurricane’s three NIT games. He had considered entering the NBA draft, but decided to return for his junior season.
