Star Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left Monday's game against the Atlanta Braves with what appeared to be a quad injury. SB Nation Denver has a good description of what went down.
Troy Tulowitzki Injury: Rockies Star Leaves With Quad Trouble, Status Unclear
He hit into an inning-ending double play and when he was several feet away from first base it was clear that he felt something bothering him.
Milling around first base, Tulowitzki started holding his quad and that’s when the trainers came out.
The severity of the injury isn't yet clear. If Tulowitzki is out for any sustained period, that would be tough on the Rockies, who are currently six games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the N.L. West. On Sunday, the Rockies also lost another star, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, when Gonzalez ran into a wall in the outfield. He's currently unable to grip a bat, so it sounds like he could be out for a while.
In addition to his strong hitting (he currently leads the Rockies with 17 home runs, and he has an. 839 OPS), Tulowitzki is one of the best defensive players in baseball. An extended injury absence would be hard on the Rockies' pitchers, particularly ground ball pitchers like Aaron Cook and Jhoulys Chacin.
Jonathan Herrera would likely get plenty of playing time at shortstop in Tulowitzki's absence, although Chris Nelson could be a factor as well.
