Sean McAdam tweets that Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester's lat strain is likely to keep him out for two weeks. That probably means a trip to the disabled list. As Jeff Sullivan notes, lat strains aren't nearly as serious as elbow or shoulder problems, but they can be annoying. An estimate of two weeks makes sense.
Jon Lester Injury: Lat Strain To Sideline Red Sox Hurler Two Weeks
This injury probably won't be the end of the world, but it will strain - so to speak - a Red Sox rotation that's already missing Clay Buchholz, who has back trouble, and Daisuke Matsuzaka, who had Tommy John surgery last month. They also have John Lackey pitching very poorly. With Josh Beckett as Boston's only reliable starter right now, the Sox need Lester to come back soon, or else the Yankees have a good chance to widen their lead in the A.L. East.
Lester had been throwing a no-hitter for four innings when he was forced to exit his start on Tuesday. He had struck out five and walked one.
It's possible Alfredo Aceves could take Lester's place in the rotation, particularly if Lester is only going to miss a few starts.
