Jon Lester Injury: Red Sox Southpaw To Disabled List

Boston Red Sox lefty Jon Lester, who left Tuesday night’s game with a lat strain, is headed to the 15-day disabled list, according to a tweet from Pete Abraham, Red Sox beat writer for the Boston Globe.

That will make Lester the fourth Red Sox starter to hit the DL this season; John Lackey has returned, but has pitched poorly since then. Daisuke Matsuzaka and Clay Buchholz are also on the DL.

Scott Atchison, who according to Pete Abraham’s tweet is now with the club, will likely be activated to take Lester’s place on the 25-man roster, though it will probably be Alfredo Aceves, who has already made several spot starts replacing injured Red Sox starters, replacing Lester in the rotation.

Despite all the pitching injuries, the Red Sox have played very well over the last two months; they are 20-10 since June 1 and 39-20 since May 1, moving 1.5 games behind the first-place Yankees and leading the wild card race. The Red Sox will face the Blue Jays at Fenway Park Wednesday night with Tim Wakefield taking the mound.
