You might not know Barry Bremen’s name, but chances are you’ve heard about at least one of his exploits. Known as The Great Imposter, Bremen set the bar so high for sporting event crashing, it has never been matched.
Barry Bremen a.k.a. The Great Imposter, Dies At 64
Bremen passed away recently from cancer at age 64. Every time you see some young punk think they’ve accomplished something by running across and getting tackled in a baseball stadium, think of Bremen and how much more he was able to do.
In 1979, with the help of Royals third basemen George Brett, Bremen snuck onto the field dressed in a Yankees uniform at the All-Star Game. Tommy Lasorda chased him off the field. All he did then was hide out in the Seattle Kingdome whirlpool for a few more hours.
In a move that required true balls of steel, Bremen then dressed as an umpire during a 1980 World Series game and walked out to home plate with actual umpires before he was discovered
Proving that is exploits weren’t limited to baseball, Bremen joined the then-Kansas City Kings on the floor for warm-ups in 1979. How’d he get away with it? He was wearing an official uniform. He was able to do it again in 1981 during the All-Star Game.
Bremen also posed as an NFL referee, a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, a professional golfer and even accepted an Emmy Award while the actual winner was still on their way to the podium. He was a true five-tool imposter.
