Yankees Vs. Indians: Derek Jeter Still Questing For 3,000th Hit

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter entered Wednesday's contest against the Cleveland Indians just four hits away from the 3,000 hit milestone and after his first two at-bats he is still stuck on 2,996 hits. Facing mid-90s heat from Justin Masterson, Jeter struck out on a 96 mph sinker, the sixth pitch of at-bat, to start the game off. Still battling Masterson in the fourth inning, Jeter flied out to center fielder Grady Sizemore.

But the Yankees are currently down, 2-0, to the Indians through four innings. Masterson has allowed just one hit, a single to Alex Rodriguez in the second, and another base runner on an error Asdrubal Cabrera. He has struck out five so far, including Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano in the fourth inning.

Making his first start for the Yankees since April 14, Phil Hughes ran into trouble during the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff walk by Michael Brantley and an Asdrubal Cabrera single put Travis Hafner in position to hit an RBI single. A wild pitch by Hughes and throwing error by Russell Martin allowed Asdrubal Cabrera to score.
