Things are going from bad to worse at FC Twente, where a second person has died following the collapse of a section of the De Grolsch Veste stadium on Thursday. The club, who were away on a tour of New Zealand, have opted to return in light of the disaster, with Twente chairman Joop Munsterman saying that coming back to the country is an act of solidarity:
De Grolsch Veste Stadium Disaster Claims 2nd Life
[In light of the deaths it is] impossible for us to continue our training camp in New Zealand and we cannot play against New Zealand.“We did not want to remain such a distance from what happened today. The open day on 17 July will not occur and the other events in the stadium will not proceed until further notice.
The Dutch government has launched an inquiry as to the cause of the collapse, which occurred during renovations to the stadium to expand its seating capacity. The stated cause in early reports was support beams buckling, but a failure in the moment connections at the apex of the stands seems the more likely cause.
