With the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals set to be played next week, the USSF announced the winning bids for the semifinals, all currently scheduled for Aug. 30. The two teams that seem to be most serious about wanting to host are Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake, both of whom are guaranteed to play at home if they make it that far.
U.S. Open Cup Announces Potential Semifinal Pairings
Sporting Kansas City would host either the Chicago Fire or the New York Red Bulls. Real Salt Lake outbid both FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders. Sporting KC will host the Richmond Kickers in the quarterfinals and Real Salt Lake will go on the road to play FC Dallas.
That the Fire and Sounders could both potentially play on the road is probably a sign that more teams are taking this tournament seriously, if for no other reason than the realization that winning it is the easiest path to the CONCACAF Champions League.
