Shane Victorino Injury: Phillies Outfielder On DL With Thumb Sprain

On Sunday, in a game against the Blue Jays, Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino jammed his thumb attempting to make a play in the field. He was out of the lineup for the following three games, and on Friday, the Phillies have opted to place Victorino on the disabled list. Todd Zolecki:

The Phillies have placed Shane Victorino on the DL. Pete Orr has taken his place.

Victorino is dealing with a Grade 1 sprain of his thumb, so there’s nothing significantly wrong, here. It’s just one of those little things that makes it difficult to hit, so the Phillies are giving Victorino a couple weeks to heal up. Having the All-Star break coming up reduces the impact.

And speaking of the All-Star break, Victorino was just announced as the NL’s winner of the Final Vote, but now his spot will be taken by somebody else. At least he knows he’s loved.

This is Victorino's second DL stint of the season, and he'll be eligible to return on July 19. The 30-year-old has posted a .900 OPS on the year, and Michael Martinez and John Mayberry have gotten starts in center in Victorino's absence. Orr is coming up to man the bench.
