Padres catcher Nick Hundley got off to a strong start this season, holding an .800 OPS at the end of April. He then missed more than a month with an oblique injury, and soon after he came back, he started experiencing problems with his right elbow. He missed four games with elbow irritation last week, and now word's out that he's going to have surgery to get things fixed up:
Nick Hundley Injury: Padres Catcher To Have Elbow Surgery
Catcher Nick Hundley will head to San Diego on Friday to have arthroscopic surgery to remove loose particles in the troublesome right elbow that has given him fits for the last 10 days.
Hundley’s dealing with the famed “loose bodies” in his elbow, and the procedure will keep him out for the next 3-6 weeks. He could’ve tried to play through the pain, and he could’ve opted for a cortisone shot, but he’s chosen surgery because he wants to put this behind him and return before the end of the year.
Hundley's season OPS is down to .629, as he'd lately been in a slump. While he's out, Rob Johnson and Kyle Phillips will handle the regular catching duties, and Luis Martinez is being promoted to take Hundley's spot on the active roster.
