Germany are the hosts and favorites to win the Women’s World Cup and few expected Japan to have a chance of upsetting them in the quarterfinals, but after 45 minutes it looks like Japan just might do it. Japan is always technically sound and are using that to control the match, but to Germany’s credit they haven’t been broken down. They seem content to absorb the pressure and for all of their possession, Japan hasn’t been able to turn it into chances. As a result, the first half ended without a goal in front of a capacity crowd in Wolfsburg.
Women’s World Cup 2011, Germany Vs. Japan: Hosts Under Pressure From Japan
The first quarterfinal of the day between England and France went to extra time and then penalty kicks and it looks as if this quarterfinal might do the same. Japan has done an exceptional job of creating width and stretching Germany wide. It has created huge gaps between the Germany player so even when they do get the ball, the Germans have had trouble putting together a competent attack.
Japan may look like the better team through one half, but Germany are hardly panicking and haven’t had to worry about many Japan chances so they’re rather comfortable, even if they aren’t on the front foot. Most would still favor the Germans in the second half, but no longer do they seem like sure bets to win as Japan seeks out what would undoubtedly be the biggest upset of the tournament.
