Right before Barry Zito came off the first disabled-list stint of his career, he tossed a complete-game shutout in Fresno. And in his first three starts off the disabled list, he was stellar, throwing 21 innings and allowing only three runs. He was back!
Barry Zito Going On Disabled List With Strained ... Something
Yeah, not so much. In his last three starts, he's thrown 15-2/3 innings and allowed six home runs and 19 runs. And with left-hander Jonathan Sanchez about to come off the DL, the Giants needed to make a decision on what to do with Zito. He's still due about $50 million over the next two-plus years, so releasing him isn't a great option. He's never pitched in the bullpen, so there's a pretty good chance that wouldn't work out. What to do, what to do? From the AP's Janie McCauley:
Struggling Giants lefty Barry Zito going back on the disabled list, manager Bruce Bochy tells The AP. No details of injury, 2nd DL stint. He’s suffering from malthrow, a condition that can be deadly to careers. No word yet on what the actual reported injury is or isn’t, but Zito won’t be in the rotation for the foreseeable future, if he ever is again.
