Ian Bell’s run-out against India was the much talked about incident of the third day’s play between India and England at Trent Bridge.

The controversy erupted off the last ball of the session before the tea-break, when Bell’s partner, Eoin Morgan had flicked a delivery from Ishant Sharma to the fine-leg, which Bell thought had ended up going to the fence. The ball hadn’t rolled over, saved in time before being thrown back to the wicket-keeper, by which time, Bell had begun to walk towards the dressing room.
However, the ball was clearly not dead by then, given that the umpires had not, till that time, called it over. The bails were dislodged by the fielder, Abhinav Mukund, and an appeal was made. The third umpire was called in to adjudicate and check whether the ball had crossed over to the fence – it hadn’t and the batsman was rightly given out. A rather stunned Bell, who had, by this time, reached the fence en route the dressing room thinking that it was tea, was stopped there and declared out.
At the lunch break, the pair of the English captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower asked Dhoni to take the appeal back given the circumstances in which it had been taken. Dhoni consulted his teammates and agreed to take it back. Bell was reinstated and he went on to score 159.
