Illinois linebacker Ashante Williams has been suspended indefinitely from Fighting Illini football activities following a DUI arrest early Saturday morning. Williams was arrested just off of the Urbana campus at 1:37 am after he was pulled for an alleged traffic violation. After struggling through a field sobriety test, Williams admitted he had been drinking and was taken to Champaign County jail, where he was released on $100 bail at 5 a.m.
Illinois LB Ashante Williams Suspended Over DUI Arrest
Williams recorded just 19 total tackles in limited playing time last season. However, he was expected to replace Nate Bussey in the Illini starting lineup this season. This latest incident puts his playing status in jeopardy. Should Williams miss any games this season, redshirt freshman Earnest Thomas is expected to step up.
Head coach Ron Zook has yet to release a statement on the matter.
