Carlos Carrasco Suspended Six Games, Fined For Frustrated Headhunting

Friday night, Cleveland Indians starter Carlos Carrasco was struggling in a start against the Kansas City Royals, and that was before he allowed a grand slam to Melky Cabrera that made it 7-0. That blew the game wide, wide open, and Cabrera stopping to admire his dinger didn't help to calm Carrasco down.

Naturally, then, Carrasco was pretty frustrated, and did this with his very next pitch, to Billy Butler:

Carrasco was ejected and shared some belligerent words as he walked off the field. And that wasn’t his only punishment; according to Jerry Crasnick, Carrasco has now been suspended and fined:

MLB suspends Carlos Carrasco 6 games and gives him undisclosed fine for throwing at Billy Butler.

Carrasco will probably appeal, and the appeal will probably get the suspension reduced to five games, but right now it looks like Carrasco will have to miss a start.

Which isn’t what the Indians want to hear, given that they’re trying to hang in the race. Fortunately, though, they did just trade for Ubaldo Jimenez. And besides, Carrasco has a 4.67 ERA on the year, good for an 82 ERA+. So while Carrasco’s suspension will force them to go to their depth, the expected replacement starter probably won’t be much worse than the guy he’s replacing.

It stands to reason that Jered Weaver should face similar discipline for throwing at Alex Avila on Sunday.
