Dutch Eredivisie, Matchday 2: Twente Roll Over AZ, Feyenoord Impress

AZ Alkmaar finished all the way up at fourth last season and were supposed to continue their rise up the Eredivisie table. At least that was the plan after laying the wood to PSV last week, but Twente had other thoughts. Twente are already title contenders and had no problem showing AZ that they were a long ways off on Saturday with a dominating win in Holland’s premier game of the weekend.

Elsewhere, Feyenoord showed glimpses of brilliance against Roda JC, raising hopes that the once mighty club might be able to hop up the table and compete for European places again. There are reasons for concerns with PSV though. Thought of as possible title contenders before the season, PSV were embarrassed last week against AZ and this week had to squeak past RKC Waalwijk, who have just been promoted. That’s hardly going to instill confidence in a team that is playing somewhere between poor and awful at the moment.

Twente Enschede 2-0 AZ Alkmaar

Everybody knows that Twente are led by their potent attack and they showed AZ just how potent they can be right from the start. Just three minutes after the start the home side drew a foul and Dwight Tiendalli’s free kick was perfect. He put the ball right on Marc Janic’s head a few yards from goal and Janic had no issue nodding the ball home. The rest of the first half was rather even and AZ actually had a couple chances to equalize, but Nikolay Mihaylov was on top of his game.

The second half was all Twente and they were unlucky to have not won by more as chance after chance went begging. They ended up not needing those extra chances though as Bryan Ruiz doubled their lead to put the match out of reach. The Costa Rican came off of the bench and not long after shook off a defender, got to within 12 yards and exquisitely chipped the goalkeeper to seal the Twente win.

Feyenoord 3-0 Roda JC

Jerson Cabral decided that he would do what it took to put Feyernoord on the right track, scoring twice as Roda JC were left helpless. First, Cabral cut in from the right and from 20 yards unleashed a shot right into the corner to put Feyenoord in front. In the second half he did the same thing, except he faked a shot from where he scored the first before taking another touch to leave him straight away for a low finish that gave him two goals. In between, Leroy Fer added a goal and Feyernoord were cruising to a dominant win.

PSV Eindhoven 1-0 RKC Waalwijk

Try as they might, Waalwijk just couldn’t get past PSV. They had a few chances, but they couldn’t get a point at Philips Stadion. That’s a good thing for PSV, who would have been in real trouble if they were unable to beat a newly-promoted side and on just one point after two matches. Dries Mertens did the honors for PSV with a first half strike, a goal that stood up to get PSV three point, even if it didn’t get them much confidence.

Vitesse Arnhem 4-0 VVV Venlo

At some point Venlo may have thought they would win this match, but it couldn’t have been for long. Vitesse absolutely dominated them. It started just five minutes in when Martin van Ginkel finished cooly to put Vitesse on top. Not even 10 minutes later Vitesse had doubled their lead, or more accurately, Venlo had doubled it for them as an own goal made it 2-0. Wilfred Bony had been a terror all first half and finally got a goal to show for it just after the break when he had an easy tap in finish to make it 3-0. Giorgi Chanturia finished things off with the best goal of the four, dribbling half the field before striking for a great 20-yard goal. Meanwhile, Venlo have played two matches and are still looking for their first goal.
