At some point maybe goals scored against Vancouver shouldn't count to season statistics? The expansion Canucks are just completely out of their depth at the back and have given up tons of goals all season so when they had to head to the east coast to play DC United, why would it be any different? Chris Pontius scored twice as DC ran roughshod over the Whitecaps in a 4-0 victory that was as lopsided as the score indicated.
DC United Vs. Vancouver Whitecaps: Chris Pontius Brace Leads DC To 4-0 Win
It took until first half in jury time for DC to finally break through, although it is not as if they were short on chances in the first 45 minutes. The goal was all Dwayne De Rosario's, even if Pontius got credit for it. De Rosario spun two players to get free on the right before crossing all the way across the face of the goal. Pontius was running at the far post and slid to nudge the ball over the line for the opening goal.
The second goal was given to Andy Najar, but it was really as much of an own goal as you will see. Andy Najar ran down a long ball and before it ran across the end line he ripped a shot. He had no angle to shoot at and Jay Nolly let the shot bounce between his legs and in for the goal. The scoresheet says Najar, but to those watching it was Nolly's goal.
Pontius got his second goal on a DC counter-attack. The home side rushed down field and Stephen King had a shot blocked by a retreating, sliding defender. The ball bounced across to Pontius though, who had plenty of goal to shoot at to make it 3-0.
King finished things off when De Rosario set him up perfectly with a pass at the top of the box. King took a great first touch to drag the ball away from the defender then slid the ball home and DC had themselves their 4-0 victory that had to please manager Ben Olsen, who was forced to watch from the stands as he served a suspension.
