Tommy Hanson Injury: Braves Place Starter On Disabled List With Shoulder Tendinitis

Braves righty Tommy Hanson went on the disabled list in June with shoulder discomfort, but returned to pitch effectively for a few weeks. Since the All-Star break, though, he's allowed 24 runs over five starts with diminishing velocity. Recently the Braves talked about skipping Hanson's next start or at least pushing it back, but instead, on Sunday, they've placed him back on the DL.

Says David O’Brien:

will start Randall Delgado on Tuesday in Hanson's place; aiming for Hanson to return Aug. 23

Randall Delgado is one of the organization’s top pitching prospects, and the good news for Atlanta is that it’s embarrassingly rich in arms. The bad news is that Hanson can’t seem to shake whatever is bothering him. Tests have repeatedly shown that there isn’t any structural damage in his shoulder, which is promising, but discomfort is discomfort.

With luck, Hanson just needs a little break, and he’ll come back strong. As the Braves hold a five-game lead in the Wild Card race, now’s a good time for them to give Hanson a rest.
