Jorge Posada On Verge Of Signing With Astros

That headline grabbed you, didn’t it? Sorry. But this story about Jorge Posada is making the rounds:

Jorge Posada wearing anything but Yankees pinstripes? That would have seemed impossible a few months ago.

Not anymore.

Posada, a career-long Yankee who is celebrating his 20th year with the organization, said he would consider playing for another team once his contract is up at the end of this season.

"It could [happen]," Posada told The Post yesterday. "I don't know what's going to happen after this year. But we'll see."

I'm not sure exactly why Posada's statement would surprise anyone. Most players want to play as long as they can play. If the Yankees hadn't been willing to massively overpay for Derek Jeter last winter, he almost certainly would be wearing something other than Yankee pinstripes today.

The real trick would be finding another team willing to pay him the major-league minimum salary after this season.

You can’t blame Posada for feeling like he can still play. Especially after his big Saturday. But unless Posada enjoys the mother of all Septembers -- which seems unlikely, since he’s unlikely to play much in September -- this is almost certainly his farewell tour. Let’s enjoy him while we still can.
