When police arrived at the scene, the children had reportedly been let out of the house. Corwin Brown kept his wife inside, however, at one point standing her in front of a window so that police could see that she was okay. Throughout the standoff SWAT officers communicated with Brown via phone, text messages and, eventually, bullhorn.
The standoff finally ended just before 8 p.m. when Brown fired two shots inside of his enclosed garage. One of the bullets struck Brown in the torso, at which point he opened the door and came outside in distress. There is no word yet on his medical condition.
There has been no indication as to what, exactly, provoked the incident. Whatever the reason, the episode is a tragic one for an accomplished former football player and coach. Brown played safety for the University of Michigan, and professionally for the Patriots, Jets and Lions. His coaching career began following his retirement after the 2000 season. His last stop was as defensive backs coach for New England before being let go following the 2010-11 season.
