A.J. Pierzynski Injury: White Sox Catcher May Need Wrist Surgery

White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is on the DL for the first time in his career after being hit by Royals lefthander Bruce Chen on Friday, breaking his wrist.

More bad news came this morning, as the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Pierzynski may need wrist surgery:

‘‘In 10 days, we will have some tests on him, and then if there’s cartilage growth in that area, then it’s an indication that it’s healing,’’ general manager Ken Williams said. ‘‘If there’s not, then it may mean he has to have surgery.’’

An MRI exam and CT scan performed Monday revealed a hairline fracture. The Sox training staff is characterizing it as a compression or bruise issue. The wrist will be placed in a cast to immobilize it.

Pierzynski has been a key cog for the White Sox ever since his signing as a free agent before the 2005 season. The best- case scenario is that he’s playing in early September; if he has surgery, he’s going to be done for the season. With Pierzynski out, White Sox catching will be handled by Tyler Flowers and Donny Lucy.
