Jimmy Nielsen Hit In Face By Bobblehead, Knocked Out

The Sporting Kansas City vs. Portland Timbers match this evening has taken a surreal - and worryingly serious - twist. Jimmy Nielsen, Sporting's goalkeeper, was minding his own business with his team leading 1-0 when he was struck in the face by an object thrown from the stands. That object turned out to be an Omar Bravo bobblehead. And yes, this game is being playing in LiVeSTRonG Park in Kansas City*.

*Not that throwing stuff at away players is ok either.

Anyway, the bobblehead struck poor Nielsen full in the face and quite hard at that, and he went down immediately with some thrashing of the legs and then complete stillness. He wouldn’t get up for some time, having been knocked cold. By a bobblehead, lest you’ve forgotten. The game stopped while poor Nielsen could be treated, and he’s actually back in action now, after several minutes on the ground and several stitches to his face.

Good on Nielsen for having the toughness to stay in the game, but someone probably ought to be arrested for this. What an absolutely embarrassing incident.
