Michael Vick’s Quote On Eagles Vs. Bills And Bengals Isn’t A Good Look For NFL

He probably didn't even realize what he said. In an interview with Will Leitch of GQ, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick was quoted as saying that when he first exited prison and was preparing his return to the NFL, he didn't even want to play for Philadelphia because they had a solid quarterback situation with QB Donovan McNabb and QB Kevin Kolb (at the time).

Vick dropped this nugget while talking about his decision to sign with the Eagles (emphasis mine):

“I didn’t want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.” Those two teams wanted him and would’ve allowed him to start, but after meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and other reps from the NFL, Vick was convinced-and granted league approval-to sign with Philly. “And I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation.”

Vick probably didn’t realize what he was saying when he said that but, if it’s accurate, it could be a problem -- for Roger Goodell. Why? The Commissioner of a sports league, Goodell in this case, simply can not be influencing players to sign with one team over another. This isn’t necessarily about Michael Vick, but it’ll get more attention because it is. The point is that a league commissioner can not be involved in personnel decisions like this.

I would hope Goodell discusses the incident to clarify the matter from his perspective.
