Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz is going to be wearing a walking boot for a few days as he battles bursitis in his heel.
Is David Ortiz’s Season Over?
The Red Sox are not going to place Ortiz on the disabled list, but according to a noted orthopedic surgeon, they probably should:
“A week of recovery for bursitis in this area is optimistic,” said Dr. Steven Weinfeld, Orthopaedic Surgeon at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center. “The sudden transition from standing to running puts a lot of strain on the injury. Even walking can become an issue.”
The press release from The TASC Group which contained that statement gives Dr. Weinfeld’s credentials:
Dr. Weinfeld is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center specializing in the treatment of foot and ankle disorders.
It should be noted, however, that Dr. Weinfeld practices medicine in New York City. Is it possible he’s a Yankees fan and would like to see the Red Sox without one of their top hitters as playoff time approaches?
Maybe not. He’s certainly qualified to make judgments about bursitis, and the Red Sox likely ought to be cautious about Ortiz returning.
