Tommy Hanson Injury: Braves Starter Experiences Setback

Not long ago, the Atlanta Braves placed starter Tommy Hanson on the disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis. At the time, the team was optimistic that he wouldn't be out very long, but you may consider the timetable pushed back. Hanson threw a Monday bullpen that lasted just nine pitches. Afterwards he insisted that everything was fine, but subsequently had a Tuesday bullpen session canceled, and now he's admitted why. Mark Bowman:

Hanson still had shoulder soreness from yesterday’s short bullpen session. They will take it day-to-day from here.

Hanson obviously will not make his scheduled rehab start for Gwinnett Saturday.

When Hanson was placed on the DL, it was done with the understanding that he doesn’t have any significant damage in his shoulder. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he’s still feeling discomfort, and will take longer to return than expected. That the Braves hold a massive lead for the NL Wild Card makes this a minimal concern in the short term, but boy could they ever use an effective Hanson in time for the playoffs.
