With his team trailing the Dodgers 11-0 after eight innings, Tony La Russa spared the Cardinals bullpen and called on infielder Skip Schumaker to work the top of the ninth. Schumaker proceeded to throw 21 pitches, and averaged 90 miles per hour with his fastball.
Skip Schumaker Pitching Isn’t The Worst Thing Ever
Even more impressively, this is what he did to Trent Oeltjen to start off:
Ultimately, Schumaker would get burned - following a walk to Andre Ethier, he allowed a home run to Aaron Miles. That’s Aaron Miles, former teammate, and Aaron Miles, who has made five pitching appearances of his own. But Schumaker finished the inning without any more damage, and between his heat and his tempo, Cardinals fans probably wouldn’t complain if they got to see him on the mound again.
