Hurricane Irene Forces Marlins/Phillies Rescheduling

Hurricane Irene, on Thursday afternoon barreling through the Bahamas, is forecast to head up the US East Coast over the weekend. It may bring heavy storms and high winds to the major cities of the mid-Atlantic, northeastern and New England states over the weekend.

While major league baseball isn’t the most important thing people will be worried about as the storm approaches, MLB officials are watching the storm’s progress to see if any games scheduled in the region may have to be rescheduled or postponed.

On Thursday, MLB did in fact announce the first Hurricane Irene rescheduling:

The Philadelphia Phillies are the first team to officially change their weekend schedule with the full impact of Hurricane Irene likely to be felt on Sunday. Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are down to pitch in Saturday's day/night doubleheader against the Marlins with games scheduled for 1:05 and 7:05 p.m.

Games in Baltimore, New York and Boston may also be affected by the storm. David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that one or more of the Braves/Mets games at Citi Field could be affected.

We’ll update this StoryStream throughout the weekend if there are further reschedulings or postponements.
