It's been an up-and-down week for the Cleveland Indians. On the plus side, the Indians just traded for DH Jim Thome, picking him up from the Minnesota Twins at the low price of a player to be named later. On the down side, the team has slipped all the way to six and a half games behind the Detroit Tigers, with its playoff chances dwindling to the lowest they've been. So keep that in mind as you read the following news: starting pitcher Josh Tomlin has been placed on the disabled list with elbow soreness, and outfielder Michael Brantley has been placed on the disabled list with wrist inflammation.
Josh Tomlin, Michael Brantley Placed On DL By Indians

Okay, so it’s not really that bad. Brantley was DL’d to make roster room for Thome. And there’s speculation that Tomlin was DL’d with a phantom injury, since he’s been in a real funk lately. Neither player is a huge loss.
But they're still players the Indians would ideally prefer not to be without, so this news makes a tough situation tougher. Nick Hagadone has been promoted to take Tomlin's spot, although he'll work out of the bullpen.
Brantley owns a 96 OPS+ on the season, while Tomlin has a 92 ERA+. Most recently, Tomlin was pounded by the Seattle Mariners, which is as good an indicator of trouble as any.
