The Pirates lock up a key young piece to their lineup for years to come.
The deal locks up a key young player for the Pirates for years to come. Tabata, 23, is in his second-year in the majors. He is hitting .264/.351/.362 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 14 stolen bases. He returned from DL this week with a strained quadriceps injury and has been hitting well of late. Tabata has gone 15-for-38 since rejoining the squad, good for a .395 average.
Tabata finished eighth last year on the National League Rookie of the Year ballot, playing all three positions in the outfield.
