Mike Patterson Remains Stable After Collapse, Eagles Say

The Philadelphia Eagles are feeling better after DT Mike Patterson received early positive results after collapsing on the field early Wednesday morning. Patterson was about to starts drills with his teammates when he collapsed and suffered a seizure. He was taken away in an ambulance.

The scene was scary but the result is a good one as Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder described Patterson as “alert and stable” right now. He’s expected to make a recovery.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid and the players were shaken by the incident but Reid complimented Burkholder for staying calm while it was happening.

“I have to give Rick and our docs, give them the credit,” said head coach Andy Reid. “During chaotic situations like that, they all remain calm. I’m not a doctor or trainer, the players aren’t, and that’s one of your toughest guys going down. So we were all on edge a little bit and Rick just kind of calmed the situation down. One thing I think he did a phenomenal job with was evaluating it, evaluating the situation in a calm way. Bringing the ER doc in and Dr. Ng working in there and he was calm. I think in the long run there it eased the players down, we kind of gathered them around there because the sun was right beating down on Mike. But they were able to kind of see the operation take place.”

Also of note is that rookie Danny Watkins assisted with the situation before the ambulance got there. He's a former firefighter and has experience in this area.

The good news is that Patterson appears to be OK.
