David Freese Injury: Cardinals 3B Sustains Mild Concussion

It's been a rough season for Cardinals third baseman David Freese. After getting off to a fast start, Freese was hit in the hand by a pitch in early May and missed nearly two months after undergoing surgery for a broken bone. Freese returned in late June and has been a fixture in the lineup ever since, but on Thursday night, he got hurt again, as the result of an errant pitch from Marlins starter Clay Hensley:

Interestingly, Hensley threw this pitch earlier in the same at bat:

Not to suggest that there was any intent, since the bases were loaded in a tie game, but Hensley just didn’t have his control, and Freese was the unfortunate victim.

After remaining on the ground for a while, Freese got up and walked off the field. However, it’s being reported that he sustained a mild concussion, and will be re-evaluated Friday morning. The Cardinals might elect to place Freese on the seven-day concussion list.

Freese came into action batting .321 with an .838 OPS. He was replaced by Daniel Descalso. Hensley, meanwhile, was removed after the beanball, finishing with six runs allowed, three walks, and two hit batters in 2-1/3 innings.
