Right before the deadline, Atlanta Braves' center fielder Nate McLouth went on the disabled list with what was being described as an abdominal strain. He suffered the injury after slipping as he made a throw from center field in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Turns out, it was something a little more than just an ab strain. From Mark Bowman of MLB.com:
Nate McLouth Injury: Hernia Surgery To Keep Braves Outfielder Out For Six Weeks
McLouth had surgery to repair a sports hernia yesterday in Philly. #Braves estimating he will miss six weeks.
A sports hernia is, well, painful to read about, even more so than the typical sports injury. Yearrgh. The McLouth injury was one of the main reasons the Braves acquired Michael Bourn from the Houston Astros. The injury was also the reason the Braves had all of the leverage at the trade deadline, which is why they didn't have to give up one of their top prospects in the deal.
Wait a sec ...
With McLouth gone, and Jordan Schafer on the Astros now, Jose Constanza will see a lot of time in the Braves' outfield.
