The Boston Red Sox added some outfield depth before the double-secret trade deadline, acquiring outfielder/first baseman/third baseman? Conor Jackson from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for prospect Jason Rice.
Boston Red Sox Trade For Conor Jackson
The Boston Red Sox traded for Conor Jackson on Wednesday, sending minor-league reliever Jason Rice to the Oakland A’s.

Yes, Jackson has played 27 innings at third base this year, which I’m assuming is the only reason why the A’s aren’t in first place. But his main roles are outfielder and first baseman, and presumably he’ll be a right-handed bat off the bench for the Red Sox. Jackson is hitting .249/.315/.342 this season, and though he hasn’t been the same since contracting Valley fever in 2007, he’s always been reliable hitter against lefties.
To acquire Jackson, the Red Sox parted with Rice, a 25-year-old reliever with a high strikeout rate but no idea where the ball is going.

The Red Sox have been using Darnell McDonald as their primary outfield backup, though Drew Sutton and even Mike Aviles have both seen time there this year.
