The Rays have called up premier pitching prospect Matt Moore, and Twitter-friendly manager Joe Maddon has offered a hint about how Moore will be used:
Is Matt Moore The New David Price?

Like to use Matt Moore kinda like we did with Price in 08. Let's see if history can repeat itself. The games will dictate how we use him.
Price might have been the game’s No. 1 pitching prospect when he was called up three years ago in September. Price was probably good enough to start for the Rays, but their rotation was solid, plus the club wanted to limit the 23-year-old’s innings in his first professional season.
Moore signed out of high school, so this is his fourth pro season even though he's only 22. He threw 145 innings in the minors last season and 155 this season, so he's probably ready for a few more starts. But just as in 2008, the Rays' rotation right now is solid, with Wade Davis arguably the only weak link.
Anyway, Moore probably won’t start unless there’s a crying need.
In 2008, Price debuted on the 14th of September, with 5-1/3 innings of long relief in a loss. He pitched only four more times down the stetch, including one decent start and three relief outings, with no action after the seventh inning. So if Maddon really does have the Price situation in mind, we shouldn’t expect to see Moore pitching often, or in terribly critical situations.
Then again, Price did pitch in some key spots in the postseason that October. [ed.--Didn’t he pitch in THE key spot? Pitching the ninth inning of Game 7 to close out the Red Sox and get the Rays into the World Series?]
So the next few weeks might be an audition for Moore, in the event the Rays catch the Red Sox and win the Wild Card.
