On April 30, 2008, MLB issued a terse press release regarding a drug suspension for then-Giants catcher Eliezer Alfonzo:

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that San Francisco Giants catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, a member of the Club's 40-man roster, has received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Alfonzo is currently with Triple-A Fresno. His suspension will be effective tomorrow, May 1st.

Alfonzo had played 87 games for the Giants in 2006 and 26 more games in 2007. But following this suspension, he played just a few games for San Francisco in 2008, and was then made a free agent following that season. He played again, just briefly, for the Padres in 2009 and the Mariners in 2010 and signed with the Rockies prior to this season. Splitting the year between Triple-A Colorado Springs and the big club, he had hit .267/.304/.320 in 79 major-league plate appearances.

Today, Rockies writer Tracy Ringolsby reports that Alfonzo has been suspended for a second PED violation:

According to Ringolsby, Alfonzo says he will appeal his suspension: "I learned my lesson in 2008 and have not taken any prohibited substances since then."

If this appeal is unsuccessful, it’s likely that Alfonzo’s MLB career is over; he will be 33 before the 2012 season begins, and being suspended for 100 games would keep him out until past the halfway point of next season.
