Prince Fielder Hits Three Home Runs Against Pirates

Prince Fielder hit three home runs against the Pirates on Tuesday, powering the Brewers to a 6-4 win. His first two home runs, both against starter Russ Ohlendorf, were especially backbreaking, coming with two outs in the third and fifth innings. His final bomb, a two-run shot against rookie reliever Jared Hughes, scored the game-winning runs.

Fielder’s productive night gives him 38 home runs on the year, moving him into a tie for first place in the National League and throwing another wrench in Matt Kemp’s longshot bid to win the Triple Crown. Fielder also drove in five runs, boosting his season total to 120, the second-most ever of his career.

The Brewers have long since clinched the NL Central, but Tuesday’s win puts them one step close toward securing home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The win was also significant from a historical perspective: Milwaukee improved to 95-66, tying a franchise mark set in 1979 and tied in 1982 for most wins in a season. And with one more game left to play Wednesday, the team has a chance to set a new club record.
