NCAA Bracket 2012: How Virginia Basketball Got To March Madness

Bennett Ball isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but Mike Scott makes the Virginia Cavaliers dangerous.

Here is how we know that basketball needs better statistics: The Virginia Cavaliers are not in the Top 200 in Division I in points per game, rebounds per game or assists per game. Just like his daddy taught him, Tony Bennett's agonizingly slow style of basketball is working wonders for the UVA basketball program. They finished fourth in the ACC as expected and comfortably coasted into the NCAA Tournament.

Though Virginia’s home loss to Virginia Tech was a tough one to swallow, everything else went more or less according to plan for Virginia this year. They won the games they were supposed to win and lost the games they were supposed to lose. Once in a while, they bothered to take more than 45 shots.

The Cavaliers will enter the big dance coming off of a disappointing three-point loss to NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Virginia fans can take solace, however, in the fact that the game mattered far more to the Wolfpack than their team.

Though many don’t enjoy UVA’s style of basketball, at least they have one player that makes them watchable to the casual basketball fan. Forward Mike Scott is one of the best players in the ACC and he’s going to be key to any potential deep tournament run for the Cavaliers. He is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder by a wide margin, and they depend on him to take over games in which they aren’t able to completely impose their style and tempo.

Virginia earned a No. 10 seed on Selection Sunday and will face Florida in the West Region.
