North Carolina’s John Henson, the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year, injured his left wrist during the Tar Heels’ ACC quarterfinal game against Maryland. His status for UNC’s first game in the NCAA Tournament is still undecided.
John Henson Injury: UNC Forward Won’t Play In NCAA Tournament Opener
North Carolina forward John Henson will not play in the Tar Heels’ NCAA Tournament opener against Vermont on Friday because of a persisting sprained wrist injury. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by freshman James McAdoo.
Henson, the ACC’s defensive player of the year, suffered the injury when he was fouled hard by Maryland’s Ashton Pankey in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. He did not play in UNC’s semifinal win over NC State or championship game loss to Florida State.

Coach Roy Williams said Henson was feeling better this morning but that his status was still questionable. Then, word came down shortly before tip off that he would not dress against the Wolfpack.

Henson has averaged 13.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks in 29 minutes per game for the Tar Heels this season. In two games against N.C. State this season, Henson averaged 11.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. The Tar Heels and Wolfpack tip-off at 1 p.m. ET.

Henson, the ACC’s defensive player of the year, was fouled hard by Maryland’s Ashton Pankey on a drive to the basket in the first half. He came up flexing his hand and was taken to the locker room.
Henson returned to the floor later with his left wrist heavily taped. It was quickly apparent that the injury was still bothering him however, and he was taken out of the game for good less than a minute later.
