The Southern Miss Golden Eagles were able to hang with the Kansas State Wildcats until the very end of their NCAA Tournament opener despite their poor shooting, but they came up just short in the final minutes. USM made just one basket in the first eight minutes of the game and shot just 38 percent from the floor. However, they hit eight three-point shots and did well on the offensive class. It wasn’t enough at the end of the day, though, and KSU has advanced with a 70-64 win.

Rodney McGruder stole the show with a fantastic performance for Kansas State, scoring 30 points on 11-17 shooting from the floor. Jordan Henriquez was excellent as well, chipping in with 15 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Southern Miss had three players score in double figures, but all of those players -- LaShay Page, Neil Watson and Darnell Dodson -- shot worse than 50 percent from the floor.
Kansas State will play the winner of the game between the No. 1 Syracuse Orange and the No. 16 UNC-Asheville Bulldogs.
